A Homeowner’s Prep Checklist for Carpet Installation Day

A new carpet completely transforms the comfort and character of a room. Still, the success of your installation day depends heavily on what happens before our installation truck even pulls onto your property. Our professional installers work fast. They move with a practiced, brisk momentum that requires a completely bare, safe workspace to achieve tight, invisible seams. Taking a little time to prepare your rooms prevents accidental damage to your belongings, keeps the crew safe, and guarantees that your deep investment lies perfectly flat without unexpected, costly delays. At The Carpet Company, we want your transformation to be entirely seamless.

Clear the Furniture and Electronics

Our crews require an entirely bare floor to stretch and secure your new carpet properly. You must move all furniture completely out of the workspace before arrival morning. Do not leave books on shelves or heavy clothes in dressers; emptying these pieces makes them lighter, safer to maneuver, and far less likely to suffer structural joint strain when shifted out of the room.

Start early. Pack away fragile heirlooms, lamps, framed pictures, and knick-knacks first. Electronics require the most care. Disconnect all TVs, gaming consoles, soundbars, and desktop computers, then store them safely in a room that isn't slated for new flooring.

If you have heavy or highly complex pieces like a piano, a pool table, or a massive antique wardrobe, please notify your estimator at The Carpet Company well in advance. We can frequently handle these oversized items for an extra fee, but the crew needs to know beforehand so they can bring specialized moving equipment to your home.

Create a Safe, Wide Pathway from the Door

Carpet rolls are incredibly heavy, rigid, and bulky to maneuver. The crew needs an open, wide pathway from our delivery truck straight through your main entryway and down the hallways to the destination rooms.

Take a quick walk through your home's entry points. Move any decorative planters, muddy shoes, or hallway console tables that narrow your walkways or create sudden tripping hazards.

Installers also require a dedicated, covered staging area outside to prep the materials. They typically use a clean driveway, a spacious garage, or a large patio to cut the carpet and premium pad to exact dimensions. If the unpredictable Northeast Ohio weather looks rainy or messy on your scheduled date, let us know early. We will work with you to identify an alternative indoor staging zone—like a dry basement floor or a large tiled utility area—where the team can work efficiently without tracking wet grit onto your clean surfaces.

Check Interior Doors and Structural Floor Heights

New plush carpet paired with a dense, high-quality cushion pad is often significantly taller than old, compressed flooring or low-profile materials. This sudden height difference can cause immediate headaches with your interior doors, especially in historic Cleveland Heights homes where older wood doors have minimal clearance.

Test the clearance yourself before the installation crew arrives. Grab a physical sample piece of your chosen carpet and pad, place it directly against the bottom of your interior doors, and check if the door can swing freely across the path of the sample. If the new materials are higher than the gap, your doors will drag, scrape, and tear up the fresh carpet fibers. To prevent damage, pop the hinge pins and remove the doors from the rooms ahead of time. You can trim the bottoms of the wooden doors yourself later, or we can recommend a skilled local carpenter to adjust them once the project is finished.

Keep Pets and Active Kids Completely Clear

An active flooring job site has a lot of moving parts, razor-sharp utility knives, exposed tack strips, and heavy iron tools. For everyone's safety, keep children and pets completely away from the work zone throughout the day.

The loud, sudden noises of tearing up old tack strips, scraping subfloors, and running power stretchers can easily startle dogs and cats. It is usually best to put your pets in a quiet, closed room on a different floor with food and water, or arrange for them to stay with a neighbor while the work is underway. This keeps them safe from stray staples and allows the installation crew to focus entirely on the craftsmanship of your floor.

Inspect the Exposed Subfloor Foundation

Once the old carpet and worn-out pad are pulled up, you get a rare look at the actual wooden foundation of your room. Do not ignore what you see or hear during this short window. This is the perfect moment to check for loose boards, noticeable squeaks, or old water damage that has been hidden for years.

Fixing these issues now prevents future carpet failures and annoying noises. Secure any squeaky plywood sheets or old floorboards with deck screws before the installers begin rolling out the new pad. At The Carpet Company, we refuse to cut corners on the invisible elements of the job, which is why we emphasize high-quality padding and proper subfloor inspection to extend the lifespan of your installation. If you notice uneven areas or sagging joists when the subfloor is bare, let our team know immediately so we can evaluate the best way to address it.

What to Do on Installation Day

Make sure an adult who can make decisions and sign paperwork is home when the crew arrives, and remains available throughout the day. Walk through the space with the lead installer to confirm the layout, verify the seam placements, and point out any hidden wires, floor vents, or specific preferences.

Open a few windows to help ventilate the house. New carpet and seaming adhesives have a distinct, clean smell that is completely normal and fades quickly with good airflow. Finally, show the installers where they can plug in their power stretchers and iron tools so they can get straight to work.
